Sunday

Doris is doing really, really well. The doctors and nurses are so pleased with her.

This morning when the doctors came round they said the tube in Doris's nose could come out. This made her soooo happy because it has been really uncomfortable for her.
The doctors also said she could start drinking juice normally and even start to eat!

Doris has coped really well with eating. Her tummy seems to be all working fine and she has enjoyed her food!
She has eaten porridge for breakfast and lunch, 2 small yoghurts, a packet of quavers and then managed mashed potato, baked beans and chocolate ice-cream for tea!! She also just had a couple of maltesers as a treat.

The doctors said this morning that she can hopefully go home tomorrow. It looks like she will be able to. We just have to wait for the doctors to say a big yes in the morning.

Doris has recovered from her operation so well. We are so proud of her. She hasn't cried at all even though she has had some pretty horrible and painful things done to her. What a star!

The best news is that her heartburn has disappeared. She doesn't make the gurgling noise at all anymore and she is much more comfortable. This makes us all so, so happy.

The operation

This is Doris's mummy again. Doris isn't feeling well enough to write here yet so I am doing it for her.

She had her operation on Friday afternoon. It took just over 3 hours to do which was longer than we expected.
When the doctors spoke to us afterwards they told us that they had found a lump called a cyst near the top of her tummy which they weren't expecting to find. It was a bit yucky and they had to take it out through a hole they made near her belly button before they could do the rest of the operation.

Because of the cyst having to come out Doris is taking a little bit longer to get better than we thought she would.

Today was the 1st day after her operation and she has a horrid tube down her nose which she hates. She also has a tube going into her hand which is giving her water. She has only been allowed to drink small sips of water since teatime. It has been 40 hours since she last ate anything. She said a prayer tonight to hope for porridge tomorrow. It depends what the doctors say in the morning!

A quick background

Hi all, Doris's mummy is writing this.

This afternoon we will go to the hospital to get ready for Doris's operation. She has gone on a school trip this morning and she was so pleased to get to go!

I thought I'd write a bit here to tell everyone why she has to have the operation. I hope it helps people to understand.
When Doris was born she was very sick. She lost a lot of weight and when she was just 10 days old she had to go to hospital for 3 days because she was so poorly.
The doctors gave her some medicine which she had to have every time she had a bottle. It helped her a little bit but she was still very sick. There were times when she was very poorly and it was very worrying for us all.

As Doris grew up we realised she wasn't able to burp and was often in a lot of pain with heartburn. The heartburn gives her sore throats and makes her tummy feel very sore. The heartburn affects Doris's sleeping at night and makes her very sad.
Doris had alot of tests done to find out why she has so much pain and the doctors said she has a hiatus hernia where part of her tummy comes up into her chest. That part of her tummy shouldn't be there so the doctors need to pull it back down again. When they do that they are going to mend the tube that comes out of her tummy to make sure the bit of tummy stays where it should do and that she doesn't get heartburn any more.

When Doris has had her operation she will have to be very careful about what food she eats for a while. It might get stuck where they mended the tube!

Doris will be in hospital for 4 or 5 days and then will need a few weeks off school. If you are her friend and you know where we live be sure to come and visit her when she gets home. She might get very lonely and will miss all her friends so much. If you can't come and visit she would love to receive some letters!

I hope this helps you to understand why Doris needs her operation.
